What Is an Informal Letter?

Informal letters are personal letters that are written to exchange feelings between friends, family members or acquaintances. Allow an informal writer to express his/her feelings, share personal experiences, and greet and maintain a personal relationship. Unlike formal letters, informal letters often lack strict formatting and may include storytelling, humour, and informal language elements. The language used in an informal letter is casual and personal.

Informal Letter Format

Every Informal letter has the following points:
1. Heading

In this part, we write our own address and the date. Both things are written on the top left side.

(i) Address: While writing any letter, first of all, write the address on the top left side of the page. The address must be accurate, complete and concise. So that readers can easily respond to the letter. If the recipient of the letter is abroad, the address should also include the name and postal code of his country.
(ii) Date: The date on which the letter is being written must exist. The date should be written below the address. You can write the date in either of the following formats:
For example 10th May 2021 or May 10, 2021

So, as per the above description, the heading should be like the examples below:
(i) Bajaj Road
    Sikar
    July 10, 2023

(ii) 10 New Colony
Jaipur
     10 July 2023

2. Greetings / Salutation

It is written below the date in the left corner. This is similar to how you greet someone when you visit or leave. The salutation should always be at the beginning of the letter. Greetings are written according to the person to whom the letter is written.

(a) For relatives – My dear Father / Mother / Brother / Uncle etc.

(b) For Friend – My dear Abdullah.

(c) For officer or businessman – Sir / Dear Sir / Madam etc.

3. Body of the letter

This is the main part of the letter. It starts on the next line below the salutation. In this part, all those things are written which the sender wants to say.

You can elaborate on the things for which you have written the letter. You can talk to him about the latest happenings in your life. You can also talk about yourself and other family members and ask about their health.

Use casual, simple and friendly words with a friend. But if you are writing to an elder relative, then use very respectful and meaningful words.

One way to determine the quality of the letter is to use the same tone in the letter as you usually speak to the person in front of you.

4. Subscription

It is written at the end below the last line of the main body of the letter. It begins with the left corner.

(a) For Relatives – Yours affectionately / affectionately Yours

(b) For Friends – Yours Sincerely / Sincerely Yours / Your loving friend.

(c) For businessman/officer – Yours faithfully / Your Truly.

5. Signature

The letter writer should sign below the subscription. There are no specific words used for signature in informal letters. It depends on the writer and the recipient’s relationship. We can also use any one of the following.

Lots of Love

Best Wishes

Kind Regards
