Tenses with Examples for the Students
- Tenses indicate the time of occurrence of an action or event.
- In any sentence, an action or a state of being is denoted by the verb. Hence, tenses are directly related to verbs.
- The different states of time are past, present, and future. The past is what happened yesterday; the present is what happens today, and the future is what will happen tomorrow.
- There are three types of tenses:
Each tense has its own four types. So, the total tenses are twelve as below.

Uses of Simple Tenses with Examples

We use the simple present tense for: 1. A habitual action. Exp. (i) He takes tea daily. (ii) I go to school on foot. 2. A universal truth. Exp. (i) Earth moves around the Sun. (ii)Two and two make four. 3. A future event that is already known or planned. Exp. (i) He arrives at noon tomorrow. | We use the past simple tense to talk about times in the past such as yesterday, last week, 2004, a hundred years ago, etc. Exp. (i) My father repaired the chair last Monday. (ii) I went to Jaipur yesterday. (iii) You came to Sikar in 2016.
| We use the simple future tense to show an action that takes place in the future. Exp. (i) I shall go to Delhi tomorrow. (ii) He will open the gate in the next hour. (iii) You will pay in the next week.

Uses of Continuous (Progressive) Tense with Examples

Uses of Perfect Tenses with Examples

This tense expresses an action that has been completed just now or every time. The following adverbial is commonly used. Just, recently, already, etc. Exp. (i) He has just gone out. (ii) I have recently read this novel. (iii)She has cooked food. | This tense expresses an action completed before a particular time in the past. Exp. (i) I had finished my work. (ii)The train had left. (iii) She had done her work on time. | This tense expresses an action that is to finish in near future. Exp. (i) We shall have done this work by noon. This tense shows an action that has partially been completed and is still continuing in the present time. Exp: (i) It has been raining for two hours. (ii)He has been working since 3O clock. (iii) I have been reading for three hours. | This tense shows an action that started in the remote past and was in progress or continue in the past.
Exp: (i) It had been raining for two hours. (ii) He had been working since 3O clock. (iii) I had been reading for three hours. | This tense shows an action that will begin in the future at a certain time and will continue in the future.
Exp: (i) It will have been raining for two hours. (ii) He will have been working since 3O clock. (iii) I shall have been reading for three hours. |
Note: – ‘Since’ or ‘for’ are commonly used in this tense. ‘Since’ comes for a point of time while ’for’ comes for periods of time.
